Senior Roles.
Deputy Editor:
During the first semester the editors had deputies to help control the day. Although my deputy was less than helpful, I ensured that my editor was happy with the work I put in. I came to the day with my usual haul of stories. I helped group the teams and I came up with possible ideas for the various bulletins. The editor’s strength is writing, and my strength was broadcast so rather than us both try and juggle everything. I helped with the audio, video and social media and the Editor over saw the subbing, copy and pictures. Dividing the jobs enabled us to help others without having too much workload. We kept track of the day using the boards so everyone could see where they were at and what needed to be done. This day ran smoothly and was successful thanks to the teamwork between editor and deputy.
TV Editor:
For both semesters I had the opportunity to be the TV editor. During the first semester being TV editor meant that as well as running the newsroom and inews for the first bulletin I had to use these skills and add to them in our conventional TV Studio. I enjoyed this opportunity to extend my skills and use them on a larger scale.
As the TV editor it was incredibly important that I encouraged teams to hit their deadlines so any errors can be fixed and sorted before they became problems.
I decided as editor that my strict deadline for any footage was at 2.30 to ensure we had enough time to rehearse and convert it ready to use in the studios. I ensured that there was double the people we needed in the studio gallery to give us the opportunity to teach colleagues how to vision mix, sound mix and VT playout. I was able to run the autocue and assist directing the bulletin in the studio.
During the second semester we had to ensure all our footage was in by 11.30 ready for the 12.45 bulletin. This put the pressure on the whole team and meant that I had to be prepared for leeway and be prepared to change everything at the last minute. To make sure the bulletin was a success I encouraged teams to be creative in what they produced and to do push themselves by producing content they would usually avoid. I supported each team and was able to give them all help with their editing to lessen the stress and workload.
