Glastonbury Festival
Watch the Solent Productions video here: Featuring me.
Through Solent Productions I had the opportunity to attend Glastonbury Festival as a copyright organiser. This was a boring yet vital job role, as without me our OB Camera crew could not film the debate teams or the artists because Solent Productions and Glastonbury needed to have ownership and the rights to use footage.
This was a long tedious process as I had to email a list of artists, laisse with solicitors and leaders of the festival to get various signatures of artists and debate teams. A lot of this work was completed before the festival took place. I had to keep track of the whole process through various spreadsheets. Before the festival started, I had managed to get the majority of the signatures needed for us to film.
We arrived at the festival the day before the main crowd, this was so we could rig the outside broadcasting areas. We had to set up, cameras, sound, gallery equipment and Comms for all the camera operators. Although I was a copyright organiser I was taught and was able to help with the set up. This taught me a lot about the camera positioning around stages this lesson could be transferable into a studio or on location shoots.
Whilst the festival was taking place, I had a lot of running around before each set to ensure that all artists and debate teams were okay with their copyright agreements.
Although copyright organising was a lot of running around there was times where I didn’t have as much to do. This gave me the opportunity to sit in the makeshift gallery and learn how to direct camera operators and work on my vision mixing. I also helped give some advice on some of the editing.
I was also asked to help post content onto Solent Productions social media (Instagram and Twitter). Easier said than done in the middle of a festival with no signal. A small group of us were on social media and photography. We decided to keep our social media stories fun to give them a work hard play hard feel. We kept the posts professional to show followers the work that Solent Productions are doing.
In the group I had the most experience using social media to promote content, so I was able to show them how was best to do it. Doing social media required us to run around various parts of the festival to capture the team doing many things. Doing social media was a fun way to experience the festival.
My work experience at Glastonbury taught me a lot of new skills. Although I was just officially on copyright, I was able to join in and help with many other things.
Before travelling to Glastonbury, I didn’t know anyone. But after an entire week working and living next to everyone I soon left with many new friends and skills. Festival work experience is not for the faint hearted. It requires you to balance working hard and playing hard. We were usually up at 7 and still filming, directing or getting the last signature at 4am.
